Initiatives & Trends

In the mid-1940s, a few brilliant people drew up the basic blueprints of the computer age. They conceived a general-purpose machine based on a processing unit made up of specialized subunits and registers, which operated on stored instructions and data. Later inventions—transistors, integrated circuits, solid-state memory—would supercharge this concept into the greatest tool ever created by humankind. So here we are, with machines that can churn through tens of quadrillions of operations per second. We have voice-recognition enabled assistants in our phones and homes.

The Amazon Lex service is now generally available, announced at the Amazon Web Services (AWS) 2017 San Francisco Summit. Amazon Lex is a fully managed AI service that enables developers to build conversational interfaces into any application using voice and text. It is powered by the same deep learning technologies used in Amazon Alexa.

For our June 2017 issue, we cover recent patents dealing with audio coding.

Programs under the Member Driven Initiatives include Seasonal Schools, Forums, Regional Meetings, and Chapter Initiatives.

I-DeepLearn aims to increase diversity in computer science and related field by inviting students from grades 10-12 to experience machine learning (Artificial Intelligence) and deep learning (AI processing) and their applications, specifically in the healthcare domain. In this one-week online workshop, students will learn about essential concepts in machine learning and deep learning through a dynamic mix of hands-on programming projects and interactive discussions.

The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has led to widespread morbidity and mortality. Several countries have been forced into prolonged lockdowns in a desperate attempt to control the pandemic by physical distancing. Such lockdowns have devastated livelihoods and put large numbers of people at grave risk of prolonged unemployment, poverty, and even starvation.

Virtual reality (VR) holds tremendous potential to advance our society. It is expected to make impact on quality of life, energy conservation, and the economy, and reach a $162B market by 2022.
